Mountain View, Calif.—Google announced Thursday it has hired Vinton “Vint” Cerf, widely considered one of the founding fathers of the Internet, as its chief Internet evangelist.

Cerf was previously senior VP-technology strategy at MCI Corp. He will help Google build network infrastructure, architecture, systems and standards for “the next generation of Internet applications,” according to the company.

Google added that Cerf will continue working on the Interplanetary Network, a project of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, to extend the Internet into outer space for planet-to-planet communications. He will also remain chairman of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
