Chemical companies form buying hub

Published on .

Richmond, Va.--Adding to the trend of smokestack industries attempting to seize the efficiencies of the Web for themselves, a consortium of chemical and petroleum companies announced plans for a global business-to-business e-marketplace. Called Envera, the Web hub, which plans to offer e-procurement and supply chain services, is the result of an agreement among 14 companies, including BF Goodrich Co., Eastman Chemical Co., PPG Industries Inc. and Sunoco Chemicals. Despite the participation of these companies, the site, which is intended to be operational by the third quarter, accounts for only a fraction of the buying and selling power in the highly fragmented chemical and petroleum markets.
