China threatens to ban publications

Published on .

Beijing--China’s State Press and Publication Administration said Friday that the Chinese-language versions of Newsweek, Forbes and Harvard Business Review could be banned from the People’s Republic of China “for illegal entry,” according to the China Daily Web site. Foreign publications must acquire permission from the SPPA before publishing in China, and many U.S. publishers receive approval by entering into joint ventures with Chinese businesses. “According to publishing regulations, violators in transgression of the law could face fines, have publications and related facilities confiscated, or even face criminal penalties for operating an illegal business,” China Daily reported.
