San Jose, Calif.—Global Internet Protocol traffic will reach 1.3 zettabytes—with each zettabyte equaling a trillion gigabytes—according to Cisco Systems' “Visual Network Index Forecast (2011-2016).”
The increase in traffic will be driven by the proliferation of tablets and mobile phones, Cisco said. By 2016, the forecast projected, there will be 18.9 billion network connections compared to 10.3 billion last year.
Additionally, the report projected that by 2016, 1.2 million video minutes would travel across the Internet every second. That is the equivalent of 833 days.
