Manhasset, N.Y.--CMP Media made an internal announcement Monday that it will close EBN, which serves electronics buyers. The weekly’s Dec. 15 issue is its last.

EBN debuted in 1971 as CMP's first title.

CMP Media said it will launch in January an as-yet-untitled monthly print newsletter and Web site that will reach upper management in the electronics industry.

EBN posted a 31.7% decline in ad pages through October compared with the same period last year, according to data from IMS: The Auditor.

“EBN has been looking rather anemic and unhealthy for a few months now,” acknowledged Paul Miller, VP-group publisher of CMP Media’s electronics group, in an interview with BtoB. Miller said the shuttering of EBN was due in part to structural changes in electronics design and manufacturing that have resulted in the buying function moving overseas.

CMP Media’s move in 2000 to form a joint venture with Global Sources to publish EBN China and EE Times China was in response to this trend, Miller said. He added that CMP Media has recently launched EE Times' Web sites in German and other foreign languages.

“It’s very clear in our industry--in particular in the electronics industry--that you have to have a global focus,” Miller said.
