Published on .

New York--The latest figures from Media Metrix show a strong gain by San Francisco-based technology portal CNET, which had 9.6 million unique visitors in October, up from 8.3 million in September. CNET placed 13th for the month, up from 17th in September. In a press release, CNET credited its $100 million advertising campaign with driving traffic to the site. CNET's chief competitor, ZDNet, saw its unique visitors fall from 8.6 million to 8.3 million and its ranking drop from 15th to 19th. IDG.net, another technology portal, placed 49th with 3.3 million unique visitors. ZDNet plans a $25 million marketing campaign of its own, slated to begin in December. The Wall Street Journal published a story in its Monday edition in which the accuracy of Media Metrix, Nielsen NetRatings and other Internet measurement services was questioned.
