Houston--Compaq Computer Corp. and Carlson Cos. on Wednesday made job cuts amid the economic downturn. Compaq said it would expand its cuts from 7,000 to 8,500 this year, as the No. 2 computer maker faced weakening European spending, price competition and a worldwide economic slowdown. Carlson Cos., Minnetonka, Minn., said it would cut 360 jobs at its travel agencies and technology and business service divisions. Carlson specializes in travel, hospitality and direct marketing services and has 72,000 worldwide employees.
