comScore: Apple still leads U.S. smartphone market

Reston, Va.—Apple Inc. retains its lead as the largest smartphone manufacturer in the U.S., although Samsung Group has narrowed the gap, according to a report by comScore. For the second quarter, the Apple iPhone's market share in the U.S. was 39.9%, up from 39.0% in the first quarter. Smartphones sold by Samsung had a 23.7% share, up from 21.7%. Other smartphone manufacturers saw slight slips in market share, including HTC Corp. (8.5%, down from 9.0%), Motorola Mobility (7.2%, down from 8.5%), LG Corp. (6.6%, down from 6.8%) and BlackBerry (4.4%, down from 5.2%). Because many smartphone manufacturers use Google's Android operating system, it is the overall OS market leader in the U.S., with a 52.0% share.
