Chicago--Crain Communications, the parent company of BtoB, announced Wednesday that the December issue of Modern Physician will be the last print edition of the magazine.

The publication, which was launched in 1997, will become a virtual magazine, with a daily e-newspaper, monthly e-newsletter and expanded Web site.

Modern Healthcare, Modern Physician’s sibling publication, will expand its editorial coverage of issues of interest to physicians, managers and executives. That expanded coverage will include a weekly news feature in Modern Healthcare about physicians.

“Properly aligning all the stakeholders in the health care delivery system is one of the major challenges facing health care executives today. Key to that proper alignment is the relationship between hospitals and physicians,” Charles S. Lauer, VP-publisher of Modern Healthcare, said in a statement.

Commenting on the decision to shut down the print edition of Modern Physician, Robert Crosland, managing director of media investment bank AdMedia Partners, said, “It [Modern Physician] is in an overpublished market, and it doesn’t have an advantageous position in that market.”
