New York--Scott Crystal, publishing director of Ziff Davis' consumer magazine group, on Tuesday was named president-CEO of Gruner+Jahr USA's Business Innovator Group. Crystal replaces David Carey, who recently bolted just six months into the job to return to his post as publisher of The New Yorker. Crystal, whose appointment came just one day after Ziff Davis fired president-CEO Jim Dunning, will be responsible for both Fast Company and Inc., which G&J acquired as a springboard into the business publishing market. Both magazines been struggling because of the slump in the technology sector. Through July, ad pages for Fast Company were down 49% compared with the same period last year, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. Ad pages for Inc. were down 44% during the same period. Crystal was VP-publishing director of the National Geographic Society, which includes National Geographic.
