Owatonna, Minn.—Sixty-seven percent of direct marketers indicated they are planning to increase staff in the fourth quarter, up one percentage point from July, according to a survey by Bernhart Associates Executive Search, a direct marketing industry recruiter that tracks employment trends.
However, the number of companies planning cutbacks in staff increased to 10%, versus 2% in July; and 15% of those surveyed said they have imposed a hiring freeze, compared with 6% in the summer.
“There was very strong hiring activity during the first half of this year,” said Jerry Bernhart, president. “It appears some companies are bringing down the help-wanted signs until 2007.”
The survey is based on 143 companies that responded to the e-mail survey in October.
