Direct marketing hiring weakens in Q4

Owatonna, Minn.—The sputtering economy is affecting job prospects for digital and direct marketers negatively, according to the latest survey of hiring decision-makers and human resource officials by direct marketing executive search company Bernhart Associates.

According to Bernhart's latest “Quarterly Digital and Direct Marketing Employment Report,” which projected fourth quarter 2011 hiring trends, 40% of companies said they plan to add to staff in the final three months of the year. That percentage was down from the 45% who said they planned to add to staff in the fourth quarter six months ago; 52% said they planned to add staff in the fourth quarter at the beginning of the year. Twenty percent have a hiring freeze, up from 16% in the spring quarter; and the percentage of companies planning layoffs in the last quarter rose to 8%, compared with 4% six months ago. The online survey, conducted in September, had 398 respondents.
