Direct marketing job prospects improve

Owatonna, Minn.--Hiring in the direct marketing industry shows steady improvement, but marketers continue to proceed with caution, according to Bernhart Associates Executive Search’s latest quarterly employment survey.

Among 132 companies responding to the survey, 71% said they plan to add staff in the third quarter, compared with 60% in last year’s third quarter. New hires this summer will outpace replacements by two to one, according to the findings. Most hiring is expected in account management, sales and analytics positions.

When asked if they plan to reduce staff, 8% said there would be cutbacks this summer compared with 11% in the same period in 2003.

One in five direct marketing companies responding to the survey said they have a hiring freeze, signaling no improvement in the hiring freeze index since spring 2003. Year to year, the survey showed hiring is up by about 10% over last summer.
