New York—Direct Marketing Association CEO Larry Kimmel has called for making the troubled U.S. Postal Service an independent entity, with Congress permitting it to operate like any other business.
In a letter to The New York Times
published last week, Kimmel urged that the Postal Service—facing a loss of as much as $10 million for its fiscal year ending Sept. 30—be allowed to make its own rightsizing decisions free of congressional control, including cutting personnel and controlling employee benefit packages, to allow it to better serve the needs of commercial mailers.
Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe is expected to appeal today to Congress for financial relief, including overhauling federally mandated employee healthcare and pension systems, and closing thousands of individual post offices.
