Dot-com closures doubled this year

Published on .

San Francisco--Double the number of dot-coms shuttered this year versus last, though recent months suggest the worst may be over, according to a new study from Webmergers.com. Five hundred and thirty-seven Internet companies went out of business or sought bankruptcy protection this year, versus 225 last year. However, a scant 21 dot-coms shuttered this month and last, the lowest mortality rate since the summer of 2000. Between 7,000 and 10,000 dot-coms are still open for business, according to Webmergers.
