Dow Jones & Co. expects higher second-quarter earnings

New York--Dow Jones & Co. boosted its financial performance guidance for the second quarter 2003 on Wednesday. At the Mid-Year Media Review conference in New York, the company said it expects second-quarter 2003 earnings per share before special items to be between 23 and 25 cents per share.

Previously, Dow Jones said its earnings per share before special items would be in “mid-teens cents per share range.” Additionally, the company said it expects reported earnings per share to be between 34 and 36 cents per share. The company earlier said it expected earnings per share to be in the “mid-20 cents per share range.”

Dow Jones issued its earlier guidance for the second quarter when the outcome of the war in Iraq was still uncertain. Analyst expected Dow Jones’ earnings to be about 23 cents per share, according to Thomson First Call.

In early trading on Wednesday, Dow Jones’ share price was up 40 cents to $44.10.
