South Brunswick, N.J.--Dow Jones & Co. announced Tuesday that Paul C. Atkinson is returning to The Wall Street Journal
as senior VP-advertising. In this new position, Atkinson, who left The Journal
in 1999 to become VP of AOL, will report directly to Peter R. Kann, publisher of The Journal,
and Danforth W. Austin, general manager. Atkinson will be responsible for The Journalâs
advertising, marketing and sales efforts. Due largely to a steep decline in technology advertising, ad linage at The Journal
was down 23% through the first five months of this year, compared with the same period in 2001.
