Wilmington, Del.--DuPont announced Wednesday its plans to cut 1,500 jobs and close six plants in its performance coatings unit over the next nine months. Plants are to be closed in Caieiras, Brazil; Piobesi, Italy; Dagenham, England; Ocoyoacac, Mexico; Porto, Portugal; and Saffle, Sweden. The announced plant closings and job cuts are the result of consolidation in the wake of DuPont's $1.8 billion acquisition of Herberts, formerly the coatings subsidiary of Hoechst AG, which took place in October. DuPont recently announced 1,400 job cuts in its polyester division and 800 job cuts in its crop-protection division.
