DuPont to restructure crop-protection business, cut jobs

Wilmington, Del.--In the wake of its agreed-upon acquisition of Pioneer Hi-Bred International, DuPont announced Thursday that it plans to restructure its $2 billion crop-protection business. The restructuring will result in the loss of about 800 jobs as DuPont consolidates its manufacturing capacity and "refocuses" its research and development efforts. DuPont expects the moves to provide annual pretax savings of $200 million. The company also expects to record a nonrecurring charge in the third quarter because of costs associated with the job cuts.
