E-commerce deals on the rise

New York--In the first quarter of 1999, there were 139 announced deals in the field of electronic commerce involving either mergers and acquisitions or venture capital investments, according to figures released by Winterberry Group L.L.C., an information service provider for direct marketers. The total value of these transactions was about $2.7 billion, a 35% increase over fourth-quarter 1998 volume. Significant capital investment in several business-to-business sites, including Chemdex, e-Steel and iPrint, occurred during the first quarter.
