Postini, an e-mail security management company based in Redwood City, Calif., said spam is still a big problem despite anti-spam legislation and other attempts to stop it, such as technological solutions.

Spam accounted for about 75% of all e-mail processed by Postini in September, down one percentage point from 76% in August.

Postini said it processed more than 5.6 billion messages in September, and stopped close to 79 million virus instances from entering corporate networks, a decrease of 6.7% from the previous month. The company said it also blocked more than 14 million directory harvest attacks, attempts by spammers to hijack an enterprise's corporate e-mail directory to send out additional spam, while blocking over 4 billion invalid delivery attempts.
