Not many CEOs share the view of Edward Gillette, president-CEO of Scranton Gillette Communications/SGC Horizon, who said, “The recession was the best thing that ever happened to our company.”
With no debt and a strong cash position, Scranton Gillette was able to weather the downturn and continued to invest.
Gillette made two acquisitions in 2009 and formed SGC Horizon in 2010. SGC Horizon includes five media brands and events in the construction industry that were formerly part of Reed Business Information-U.S. SGC Horizon is owned by Scranton Gillette Communications, former RBI executives Tony Mancini and Rick Blesi, and others.
Gillette said Scranton Gillette doubled its revenue between 2009 and 2012 and gained market share. He credited the investments he made in people and technology for those results.
“We were able to recruit and keep the best editorial and sales talent, and when we decided to adopt the Drupal open-source content management platform, we brought top-notch development talent in-house,” he said.
All Scranton Gillette and SGC Horizon sites were relaunched on Drupal, and the internal department proved so successful that the company introduced a unit called MediaPress Studios in January to offer Web design, content strategy and search engine optimization services to marketers, other publishers and audience-member companies.
