eMarketer draws $1.255 trillion picture

Published on .

New York--Research firm eMarketer said late Thursday that B2B e-commerce will reach $1.255 trillion by 2003, a figure that's lower than many earlier reports from other research companies. Steve Butler, eMarketer business analyst, said the figure was reached by using Old Economy numbers. For example, the U.S. Gross Domestic Product was $8.64 trillion in 1999, and trade from that economy is not as likely as many research analysts think to quickly migrate to a New Economy setting, eMarketer said. The report comes amid increased skepticism over current b-to-b e-commerce trading reports. Many analysts and executives say that trades are often counted two or three times as they traverse multiple exchanges.
