EMarketer: Online sales to be worse than previously projected

By Published on .

New York—Internet market research company eMarketer has revised its forecast of online sales performance in the U.S. downward, citing a lackluster first half.

The company projects online sales will contract 3.1% this year.

In its May report, “E-Commerce in a Recession,” eMarketer had forecast an online sales decline of just 0.4%, to $133 billion. Its new projection, based on second-quarter analysis by the Department of Commerce, now pegs online sales this year at $128.2 billion.

Growth will resume in 2010, at 5.5%, the company forecast.
