EMC agrees to buy Data General

Hopkinton, Mass.--EMC Corp., a data systems provider, announced Monday that it has agreed to acquire Data General Corp. in a stock deal valued at $1.1 billion. Data General, Westboro, Mass., manufactures storage systems for the midrange market. IBM Corp. recently announced plans to acquire Sequent Computer Systems, another provider of data storage products. Market leader EMC and IBM will compete in a segment said to be worth about $10 billion annually.
