Houston--Energy industry powerhouse Enron Corp., which runs its own electricity, gas and bandwidth Web exchanges, this week gave a major boost to a new, independent competitor. Portsmouth, N.H.-based HoustonStreet Exchange said it will post the American electricity and natural gas prices from the EnronOnline site on its own exchange as well. Traders will be able to act on EnronOnline prices via either platform. The data sharing will begin in September, when HoustonStreet formally launches its natural gas trading exchange. Both sites benefit. Enron reaches still more buyers, while HoustonStreet gets in bed with the energy trading industry's brick-and-mortar leader. Affected will be Altra Technologies, another independent energy trading exchange, which won't have access to the Enron trade data.
