Europe’s online ad growth slowed to 4.5% in 2009

Barcelona, Spain—Online advertising expenditures in Europe grew 4.5% in 2009, down from a 20% growth rate the year before, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau Europe.

Digital was the only advertising format to experience an increase in Europe last year. Internet ad spending reached $18.1 billion, up from $17.3 billion the previous year. Most resilient was search marketing, which posted a 10.8% spending increase in 2009, although this was down from 26% growth the previous year.

The study covered 23 European markets, with Bulgaria, Russia, Slovakia and Switzerland being included for the first time.
