Facebook buys Microsoft ad technology platform

Menlo Park, Calif.—Facebook Inc. has agreed to buy advertising technology company Atlas Advertiser Suite from Microsoft Corp. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but TechCrunch.com reported that the price is a little more than $50 million. The move is expected to aid Facebook's display advertising efforts and improve ad performance metrics, Facebook said in a statement. Atlas was acquired by Microsoft in 2007 as part of its purchase of online ad service aQuantive Inc. Last year, Microsoft abandoned efforts to make the company profitable and took a $6.2 billion accounting loss, almost the entire price it originally paid.
