Facebook makes global move with Snaptu acquisition

Published on .

Palo Alto, Calif.—Facebook has taken a big step forward in its international mobile phone strategy with its acquisition of feature-phone app developer Snaptu.

London-based Snaptu develops apps for such functions as friend updates, synchronizing contacts and navigating social websites for non-smartphones—the types of lower-priced mobile phones that predominate internationally. The acquisition is expected to augment Facebook's global reach.

Facebook did not release terms of the deal, but some business newspapers are reporting that the price is $60 million to $70 million.
