Facebook reaches most U.S. Web users

New York—Facebook has continued to solidify its role as the top social networking site, with more than half (52.2%) of all Internet users in the U.S. logging on at least monthly by the end of 2010, according to a new study by eMarketer.

In addition, eMarketer projects that Facebook's penetration will increase this year to 57.1%, with 132.5 million U.S. users, up 13.4% from the 116.8 million users last year. The company projects that Facebook's U.S. penetration will climb to 62% by 2013.

The more business-oriented Twitter was used by 16.4 million U.S. adults online by the end of 2010, for a 9% penetration. Twitter's growth will surpass 26.3% this year, and reach 14% of U.S. Internet users by 2013, eMarketer said.
