Facebook surges in display ad revenue

Palo Alto, Calif.—Facebook is poised to take the lead in U.S. display ad revenue this year, overtaking Yahoo in market share of total display spend, according to a new study from eMarketer.

The consultancy is projecting that Facebook will see its revenue from display ads grow by 80.9% this year to $2.19 billion, giving it a dominant 21.6% share of total online display ad spending this year. Facebook will surge past Yahoo's $1.66 billion (16.4% market share) in projected display ad sales for the year, according to eMarketer.

Google also is experiencing display ad growth. EMarketer projected that Google's display ad revenue will grow about 31% to $1.28 billion this year, giving it a 12.6% share of the U.S. market and positioning it to overtake Yahoo in 2012.
