New York--Fairchild Publications Inc. late Wednesday pulled the plug on WWD.com-the online extension of it's flagship publication Women's Wear Daily-just a few weeks before the fashion Web site was supposed to launch. Fairchild put the new, subscription-based WWD.com, due to debut September 10, on indefinite hold because of the deteriorating ad market online. WWD had planned to charge $895 per year per online subscription. Mary Berner, president-CEO of Fairchild Publications, said in a statement: "When the timing is right, we look forward to building what the WWD.com team has done to establish an Internet presence that fits with Fairchild's business strategists." The 12 staffers involved in the site will be placed somewhere else within the Fairchild organization, said a company spokeswoman. Fairchild, a division of Advance Publications Inc., also publishes W, Footwear News, Daily News Record, and Supermarket News.
