Federated department stores to set up exchange

Published on .

Federated Department Stores Inc., Atlanta, said Monday that it would partner with supply-chain software developer Manhattan Associates Inc., Atlanta, to create a trading exchange. The move means Federated is less likely than ever to throw its support to an exchange led in the U.S. by Sears, Roebuck and Co., Chicago, and engineered by Oracle Corp. Federated had $17.3 billion in sales last year through such retail chains as Bloomingdale's, Macy's and The Bon Marche. It said the exchange would include transactional data that are more specific than electronic data interchange. Microsoft Corp., Redmond, Wash., will be an active participant in the project.
