Forecast: Internet will be only medium to grow ad dollars this year

London—In the midst of a global advertising slump much worse than it had previously predicted, media agency ZenithOptimedia Group forecast that the Internet will be the only medium to reap advertising increases this year.

The company predicted online ad expenditures will rise 8.6% globally this year, down sharply from 20.9% in 2008.

Meanwhile, ZenithOptimedia revised downward its December prediction that global advertising expenditures overall would retract only about 0.2% this year. The company now says ad spending will slide 6.9%.

The global ad recession will begin to moderate by year’s end and will see a modest recovery in 2010, compared with an extremely weak 2009,according to the company.
