London—The Financial Times
has acquired Assanka. The Web developer last year helped the FT
create an app that bypassed Apple Inc.'s App Store but, nonetheless, has reached more than 1 million downloads and contributed to FT's
total of more than 250,000 digital subscribers. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“This acquisition supports our strategy to deliver our world-class journalism anywhere, anytime on any device, delivering new digital products and services that engage our busy readers,” FT
CEO John Ridding wrote in an internal memo.
Ridding added that Assanka “will also help develop mobile and app expertise across Pearson [the FT's
parent company], acting as a center of innovation for technologies of increasing relevance and importance across the overall business.”
