'FT' debuts app that bypasses iTunes

Published on .

London—The Financial Times has launched a new app for smartphones and tablets that can be accessed through a Web browser. The new app makes an end run around “Apple's iTunes Store, Google's Android Market and other distributors to secure a direct relationship with readers,” a story about the new app on FT.com said. With the app, FT won't have to pay Apple Inc. 30% of new subscription fees as it does through Apple's iTunes store. The HTML 5 app has been designed initially for the iPad and iPhone, but FT said the app will also be adapted for Android-based devices such as the Samsung Galaxy and Motorola Xoom as well as for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The app will provide users free access to FT content during its first week.
