London—The Financial Times will publish a single daily global print edition instead of its five current regional newspapers starting in the first half of 2014, according to an Oct. 8 memo from Editor Lionel Barber to staff posted on FT.com. The brand will expand its digital strategy, taking a Web-first approach to publishing. “In future, our print product will derive from the Web offering, not vice versa,” and will be produced by a small print-focused team “working alongside a larger integrated Web/day production team.” Across print, Web and mobile platforms, the editorial team will shift from “reactive” news gathering to “value-added "news in context,' ” Barber wrote. “News editors will need to do more preplanning and intelligent commissioning for print and online. This will require a change in mindset for editors and reporters.” Barber did not address whether any layoffs would result from the change.
