Gannett reports earnings gain due to ad increase

McLean, Va.--Gannett Co. reported earnings of $347 million, or $1.29 a share, in the fourth quarter of 2002, up from $248.4 million, or 93 cents a share, in the fourth quarter of 2001. Revenue for the quarter was $1.73 billion, up 7% over revenue of $1.61 billion in the fourth quarter of 2001. Gannett said the gain was due to an increase in ad revenue at its flagship newspaper USA Today and from political advertising at its TV stations.
