Stamford, Conn.—Worldwide mobile phone sales totaled 455.6 million units in the third quarter, with sales of smartphones accounting for 55.0% of that total, the highest share to date, according to technology research and consulting company Gartner Inc.
According to “Market Share Analysis: Mobile Phones, Worldwide, 3Q13” report, smartphone sales totaled 250.2 million units during the quarter, a 45.8% increase over the 171.6 million units sold in the year-earlier period. Mobile phone sales overall increased 5.7%.
Samsung Group held 32.1% of the global smartphone market, ahead of Apple Inc.'s 12.1% share. However, while Samsung quarterly sales were flat year-over-year at 80.4 million units, Apple's smartphone sales rose 23.2% from a year ago, to 30.3 million units, on the strength of the company's new iPhone 5s and 5c.
