Google branches into expandable ads

Published on .

Mountain View, Calif.—Google is offering to online advertisers expandable ads, which start out as banners or square ads and expand dramatically when clicked on.

Such ads generally expand on a mouse-over, but Google said it would avoid this feature because of the feature’s tendency to irritate viewers.

Google said advertisers will gain revenue based on whether they use cost-per-click ads (CPC) or cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM) ads. CPC expandable ads will generate earnings only when a user clicks through to the advertiser’s landing page, not merely when the ad is expanded.
