Google hits the streets

Mountain View, Calif.—Google formally launched a 360-degree street view addition to its two-dimensional Google Earth & Maps tool that, in certain cities, will give users a “down on the street” view of that location accessible at maps.google.com. The product will initially cover Denver, Las Vegas, Miami, New York and the San Francisco Bay area.

In addition, Google launched Mapplets, a new tool that enables developers and consumers to create “mini-applications” that can be displayed on Google Maps. Partners including WeatherBug, Booking.com and Platial have already created Mapplets.
