Menlo Park, Calif.—Google Inc. plans to require a Google+ social media account for YouTube users who want to post comments about videos. Starting this week, YouTube viewers will begin to see new comments powered by Google+ on channel discussion tabs, with the update applied to all videos later this year, the company said on the YouTube blog. These comments—“conversations that matter to you,” Google said—will rise to the top of the comments list, replacing the current method that gives priority to the latest comments. YouTube users can also comment in ways that will be seen only by their friends or Google+ circles. In addition to boosting Google+ registrations, the move is seen as a way to eliminate offensive anonymous comments on YouTube.
