Grainger increases second-quarter earnings

Lake Forest, Ill.--W.W. Grainger Inc., an industrial supply company and b-to-b bellwhether,Thursday reported second-quarter net earnings of $56.0 million, an increase of 3% from a year earlier. The boost came on slightly lower sales of $1.17 billion, a decline of 2% from the $1.20 billion in sales recorded in the second quarter of 2002. Other results included a 7% growth in sales to government customers and an 8% increase in sales processed through grainger.com. Sales through the grainger.com Web site in the second quarter totaled $115 million, up from $106 million a year earlier.
