Chicago—Grainger Inc. reported Wednesday that its sales declined 9% last month compared with January 2008.

The company said sales were negatively affected in part by foreign exchange and also noted there was one less selling day last month compared with January 2008. In order to reduce costs, the company said it planned to take several steps, including the elimination of 300 to 400 jobs.
