Harry Potter IV a publishing--and logistics--milestone

Published on .

Seattle--Amazon.com has marshalled FedEx to deliver more than 250,000 copies of the next Harry Potter book on its launch day, July 8Ïa Saturday, to boot. The e-commerce giant is calling it the largest e-commerce distribution event ever. It requires massive b-to-b collaboration between Amazon and its shipper: FedEx will mobilize 9,000 delivery personnel and trucks from 700 stations, connecting with 100 FedEx flights. The effort will also tap FedEx Home Delivery, launched in March as a ground delivery service to augment FedEx's hub-and-spoke distribution operation.
