The newspaperās final print issue was published today.
Hearst announced Jan. 9 that the newspaper was for sale, but no buyers were found. The newspaper was founded in 1863 as the Seattle Gazette.
āOur goal now is to turn seattlepi.com into the leading news and information portal in the region,ā Frank A. Bennack Jr., Hearst vice chairman-CEO, said in a statement.
Hearst said it doesnāt plan to shift the print newspaper online. āSeattlepi.com isnāt a newspaper onlineāitās an effort to craft a new type of digital business with a robust, community news and information Web site at its core,ā Steven R. Swartz, president of Hearst Newspapers, said in a statement.
In addition to news coverage from reporters, the site will include more than 150 reader blogs and digital Yellow Pages.
