New York—Global mobile ad revenue reached $8.9 billion last year, up 82.8% over 2011, according to a new report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau.
Search was the dominant ad category, making up 52.8% of all mobile revenue last year. Display advertising accounted for 38.7%, while messaging made up 8.5% of mobile revenue.
The top region for mobile advertising last year was Asia-Pacific, which generated $3.56 billion and accounted for 40.2% of total global mobile revenue. North America was a close second at $3.53 billion, or 39.8% of global mobile ad revenue.
Western Europe generated $1.5 billion in mobile ad revenue, and Central Europe brought in $112 million.
