IBM boosts ad budget

New York--Saying the softening economy is a prime opportunity to grab market share, IBM Corp. announced Tuesday that it is boosting its ad budget by 17%, or $110 million. The move comes at a time when many technology companies are scaling back their ad budgets because of the creaky economy. IBM, which is launching a new ad campaign next week, will spend about 15% or more of the campaign's budget online-double the norm. IBM had earlier indicated that it would spend $650 million this year on advertising, about the same as in 2000. One part of the campaign is aimed at technical employees who recommend software to their bosses.
