IBM CEO declares PC era over

Armonk, N.Y. -- IBM Corp. Wednesday released its annual report, in which Chairman and CEO Louis Gerstner declares in a letter to shareholders, ``The PC era is over.'' He said PCs have been ``supplanted by the network.'' IBM's PC unit recorded a loss of nearly $1 billion for 1998.
