IBM, Cerner in hospital marketing deal

Published on .

Armonk, N.Y.--In a bid to capture the multibillion-dollar medical IT marketplace, IBM Corp. and Cerner Corp. will integrate their software and jointly market to hospitals. Kansas City, Mo.-based Cerner, a medical software specialist, will integrate its platforms with IBM's software, which supports server, storage and infrastructure initiatives. Technology companies are jockeying for pole position in the race to capture hospital IT spending, which is expected to surge over the coming years as hospitals work to comply by 2003 with the mandates of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. The law requires increased patient medical record protection, which in many cases requires a technology infrastructure overhaul. http://www.ibm.com
